Area 51 Early Season Park Laps - Snowboarding 2015/16

Area 51 Early Season Park Laps - Snowboarding 2015/16

Area 51 Terrain Park Shredding

This is the first video I shot after a catastrophic ankle injury from the previous season that is still plaguing me to this day.

At the time, I could barely walk or even stand, but somehow I had it in me to follow my buddy Alec down the terrain park a few times.

I have been producing snowboarding and action sports videos in the High Country of Colorado for three-years at the time of this blog post. See more about this freestyle snowboarding video.

Although the terrain park has been my main focus, keep an eye out for an upcoming downhill mountain biking video and some different outdoor mountain activity videos.

Terrain Park 2017 - Colorado Mountain Life - Sony A7 DSLR

This video was captured at the Area 51 terrain park in Keystone, CO.

This is my third season shooting at Area 51. It is also my first season shooting in the park on a DSLR.

Previous seasons were follow-cam shoots using a GoPro and a 3-axis Feiyu Tech gimbal.

I hope to purchase a gimbal for the DSLR this Winter. If that happens, my next video will be a combination of DSLR follow cam shots and slider shots with a long lens, utilizing depth of field.

The featured rider in this video is my friend and roommate for the first two-seasons, Alec Vandeweerd.

In previous years, I was next to the rider from the top to the bottom of each run. This year, I was stationary.

On our first shoot day of the season, I shot for about an hour and decided that I had way too much time to kill be tween each time Alec dropped in, so I began shooting every rider and skier that came by.

At the end of the season, I've got a good video, much needed experience shooting on the new Sony A7, I learned a few lessons, and I'm excited to start shooting again soon.

Colorado Van Life 2016 Camping Expedition

Colorado Van Life 2016 Camping Expedition

This is a video about my 3-month Colorado van camping expedition in the Summer of 2016.

The goal was simple, save a lot of money and have a great Summer, so I bought a 1985 Dodge Ram 3/4 ton van from a family member for $500.00 plus 35-hours of traded labor. Then I gutted it and turned it into a camper. I also stopped drinking for the Summer, which is a significant expense for many who work in food and beverage industry as I do.

My creature comforts included a queen-sized bed and mattress, A/C power, a cooler, which I thought had a drain installed, a large car-top carrier, several drawers for storage, a badass battery and a jumper box.

I spent about two-weeks working on the van, getting it mechanically sound for the road and building the interior into a comfortable shelter.

At first, I was pretty concerned about taking my makeshift motorhome on a long-distance trip, but by the time I sold it, I was driving over mountain passes and making road trips to remote mountain locations. In fact, I recently got a message from its current owner, who is now in Birmingham, Alabama with the van.

It was a challenge for a few days finding nice spots where I could legally camp, but it didn't take long before I had free, legal campsites in Breckenridge, Keystone, and Vail, Colorado. And shortly after, I had found where to consistently receive 5-bars of 4g mobile service in each location!

I was a little surprised how easy it was to live without most of the things that we are used to in the Western world. The sacrifice of things like a TV and bathroom were outweighed by the benefits of not paying rent, living in some of the most beautiful locations in America, and having a type of freedom that I had never really considered before.

A nice unintended consequence of living in my transportation is that I was never late to work or any scheduled engagements for the entire Summer. This was because I would usually arrive early and take care of whatever preparations I needed to right in my van.

A little hack I had going on was that I worked full-time as a bartender in Vail. Because of the magnitude of the location I worked at, I had a locker room with a shower. My now fiancee also lived one town to the East, about 30-miles over a mountain pass, which provided some extra options for showers and lodging.

One routine that I got into was taking 10-15 minutes to clean and organize the van daily.

A downfall of living in such a small space is that it can get messy really easily, but as long as you keep on top of it, cleaning such a small space is easy as well.

This was probably the best Summer of my life thus far, and the money saved from taking three-months off of paying rent and drinking alcohol saved me between $3,000 and $4,000. Now, I drink very little. Like I just needed a short break to realize how little I desire to spend money on something that is detrimental to my health and fitness goals. I still desire alcohol, but when I'm asked if I want to buy a drink at the bar now, I genuinely do not feel like it many times, and that's alright with me.

Words cannot eloquently describe the experience of living in a stealth camper that can go anywhere and park anywhere. For me, the sense of liberation the van gave me was calming and soothing.

I used to dream of living on a sail boat, traveling islands because of the views I could call my back yard. I found so many cool places to camp with locations and views that can't be described.

I know that many of the locations I found will be shut down in years to come due to over-use and under appreciation of the national forest and Bureau Of Land Management spaces. Therefore, I'm not going to disclose the camping locations I found... Finding my camp sites was part of the journey. Just don't spend any more nights than absolutely necessary in WalMart or truck stop parking lots.

15-16 Season Snowboarding Highlights - Keystone, Colorado

15-16 Season Snowboarding Highlights - Keystone, Colorado

Thanks for watching the video my roommate and I made of terrain park snowboarding at Keystone Colorado.

This video was shot at the end of the 2015-2016 season. The rider is my old roommate Alec Vandeweerd (In the Jiberish jacket) and I am the producer, Mike Gamache (In the camo jacket)

The first time Alec and I roomed together in 2014, I was literally almost twice his age.

Needless to say, I was a bit worried living with someone who has never been out on their own before, but now, 3-years later, I have so many wonderful memories and so much amazing footage from the time I have spent with Alec.

As he has improved his skills over the last three-seasons, he is starting to get in the scene with some really big names, and is currently on his way to the 2017 Superpark event on Bear Mountain.

Colorado Mountain Life Freelance Video Production

I hope you enjoyed our Colorado Video Production Reel.

This video is a compilation of some of my favorite shots I've captured in the last three-years living in the High Country of Colorado.

There is some footage outside of Colorado from my travels with an awesome client, Big Dog Motorcycles.

Most of my professional experience and background is in corporate video, along with commercials.

Most of my freelance experience is in marketing video, and most of my personal projects are based outdoors. These personal videos are usually focused on action shots with an adventurous theme.

I've spent over a decade perfecting my skills, evolving with the industry, and obtaining equipment that allows me to produce feature film quality footage.

I love to tell stories with video and music. Now that I'm focusing my energy on freelancing full-time, I want to tell your story in the most engaging and exciting manner possible.

Last Park Run Shoot of The Season - Keystone, CO

Last Park Run Shoot of The Season - Keystone, CO Snowboarding

This is the last terrain park run of the 2015/2016 season that I shot of my roommate. The rider is Alec Vandeweerd, IG: @alecvandeweerd The producer is Colorado Mountain Life; facebook.com/coloradomountainlife

This is the second season that the two of us roomed together in Summit County, Colorado.

The goal, since day 1, was to shoot amazing snowboarding videos and share them with as many viewers as possible.

The first season yielded a single 6-minute video after multiple broken bones, blown out joints,  damaged production equipment, and busted snowboard equipment between Alec and myself.

This year, we rode Keystone, with a few trips to Arapahoe Basin and Loveland.  I have the full Epic pass, but Alec just had the Keystone/A-Basin pass. Fortunately for me, my season will be a few weeks longer with additional weeks at Breckenridge and another month or two at Arapahoe basin.

This season, I am still healing from a severe injury that happened in February, 2015. Alec broke his collar bone fairly early in the season. Fortunately he is still young and healed in about 6-weeks.

We lived together for about 4-months this season and shot 9 or 10 different days, which has provided a large amount of the footage I will need for my TV show that will play on our local channel 8.

This season was amazing, and although I have a lot of recovery to focus on, I'm finally getting in good enough shape to hit rails and small jumps... I plan on riding and training as much as I can this Summer between Arapahoe Basin, hiking-in, and riding the Summer Park at Woodward.
